Sheng / Skyscraper ®
SHENG: Sounds, Born, and Rise.
SKYSCRAPER: an ensemble, group, collective or orchestra; a gathering of diverse musicians drawn from a musical community at large.
With Conduction® as its blueprint, it is the objective of Sheng/Skyscraper to collectively pursue new and inventive ideas, and evolve solutions to the challenges facing 21st century musicians and music. As an open structure, it embraces successive generations of musical and artistic concepts, styles and categories from every conceivable point of view then cross-pollinates to expand the parameters of cultural and social experience. In this way, Sheng/Skyscraper renovates and modernizes historical content to navigate the future. Sheng/Skyscraper allows us to enrich, extend, elaborate, refine and advance definitive and significant contributions to music, our appreciation of it, our hope for it, and our ability to use it wisely: musicians, administrators and audience members combined. Therefore, Sheng/Skyscraper continually presents new needs, new productions, new consumption, new education, new employment and new demands for an ever-expanding community.
It is in this spirit that Sheng/Skyscraper serves as a sonic reflection to unite communities through cross-cultural dialogue and trans-social communication.
Music director Lawrence D. Butch Morris has assembled musicians from China, Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Taiwan and the United States. Sheng/Skyscraper instrumentation consists of: Oud, DiZi, Kora, Erhu, Pipa, Balapon, Electronic keyboard, drum machine and samplers, Harp, Cello, Violin, Bass, Guitar, Vibraphone and Percussion. All of which reflect the music scene and the community of New York today. Although the instrumentation and personnel represent a wide range of style, its blueprint defies style and category, creating a new aesthetic in music through collective interpretation and personal interaction.
